4 Way Playoff Determines Sarazen Champion at the Holiday Classic

It was a 4 way playoff between Charlene Delacruz, Stephen Jarvis, Tim Coplen and Erik Novikoff that determined the Champion of the Sarazen Flight on Sunday December 4th.

The 5 of us headed out to the 1st tee of the Sun Mountain course at the amazing Paiute Resort. Not only did the Tour Players battle each other for the title, they also battled the weather and time. An  arctic storm was passing through our way with a very cold wind chill factor that got colder every 10 minutes they played.

Stephen fell into trouble right out of the gate hitting it into the desert on the right side and needing to take a penalty drop. No one hit the green forcing all to chip with Charlene coming up the closest.

Erik was first in with a 5, followed by Stephen who ended up with a 6 and a trip back to the clubhouse. Tim putted but had to wait for Charlene who ended up with a disappointing 3 putt and joined Stephen in their journey to the clubhouse. Tim made the putt and on we went to #2.

Erik decided to use the same strategy he had used earlier teeing off with his 5 wood which put him in pristine postion to the pin. Tim pull hooked it into the trap on the left got it out and hit the green in 3. Erik, with a big advantage, was just off the green on the left side in 2. Erik had a lapse in concentration and left his putt about 12 feet short. Tim was first in with a 5 as darkness was beginning to close in. I was chilled to the bone praying that Erik would make his putt, which thank God he did and won the title. Congratulations Erik and THANK YOU for making that putt!

2012 Season is off and running in Las Vegas

I'm doing my new years resolution early, I will blog more regularly this year :).

We've  got our third tournament for the 2012 season being played out this weekend at the Paiute Resort, the Holiday Classic. The course is in pristine condition and maybe we will catch a break in the weather. It was gorgeous on Tuesday. I saw Charlene Delacruz, Rod Brewster, Jr. and friends having a great time. They said the greens were really fast! They headed back to #1trying to get in 27 holes...I wish I had my clubs with me.

The schedule has finally been posted. I'm still working on the Southern Nevada Championship to be played in August. As soon as I get the course secured it will be posted.

A Frisbee Golf course was just setup down the street from us at a large park here in Henderson. I'm interested and curious about it. Here is a link that gives some rules and ideas for Frisbee Golf: http://www.ehow.com/video_2355355_play-frisbee-golf_-game-rules.html
We could have a fun Frisbee golf tournament if anyone is interested.

Southern Nevada Championship - Recap

Las Vegas, NV- August 27 - 28, 2011 – Ta-da, the final recap of the season, sorry for the delay. It was a great two days at the Southern Nevada Championship as Tour Players battled at the end of the season for Player of the Year.  Playing Arroyo at Red Rock for the first round, in less than favorable conditions and Siena Golf Club for the second round in like condition proved to be a challenge for some. I would like to thank my staff and let them know it was a job well done - Michael, Melanie & Kimmar, thank you for all you do, I really appreciate you! I also want to thank Betsey Bell whose been with us since I had taken over as tournament director, but was unable to be with us at this event.
The pace was set in the Championship flight with Greg Hudson taking the first round lead with a 77, four shots ahead of Al Swanson (Edmond, OK) and 9 shots ahead of newcomer Adam Breeden.  Al, who’s been working on some swing changes continued to struggle with the changes on round 2 keeping him at bay for any chance at a win.  Greg, starting out strong, lost 6 shots to Adam on hole #5 hitting a landmine 8 on the par 3. Greg fought back with birdies at #8 & 9 as Adam slipped a little making the turn at 39 picking up 3 shots from Greg at 42. The battle raged on as the two continued. Something snapped in Adam after he took a double at #10, as he caught on fire going birdie, birdie and completing his round at even par 36 giving him a nice 75. Greg, whose game continued to slip away managed to stay just ahead of Adam giving him the overall victory by one shot! Congratulations Greg for the victory and great comeback Adam!
In the Palmer flight, Rick Carrillo ran away from the field with a sweet even par 72, giving him a 6 shot lead over Ron Peterson (Orland Park, IL.) who came in with a nice 78 for the first round at Arroyo. Rick continued playing well at Sienna widening his gap with a nice 1-over 37 on the front side. Rick’s game frustratingly slipped on the back side, but he was still able to win by a wide margin. A fourth nine shout out to Kenny Petersen & Darrell Overturf who both fired an even par 36. Congratulations Rick for an awesome year and for being the Palmer Player of the Year, you have earned it. Do I see Championship flight in the near future ;-).
Chris Skowronek took the lead after the first round in the Hogan flight with a really nice & steady 75 giving him a 4 shot lead over Dustin Sitar, who ironically he had ended up in a playoff with last year for the Championship.  Close behind was Keir de Anda, Minh Fearnley & Lance Miller all with 80. Keir started out his first hole with a birdie, which was #18 due to the shotgun start, looking like he was ready for a battle only to find himself taking some large numbers on the front and ending his bid for the victory. Dustin started out with a big number, and then settled his game only to be bit by a few more large numbers on the front side, then settled again but ran out of holes. Chris, starting out strong, found himself struggling as his game began to slip away, also taking some large numbers on the front side and eventually sending him packing. Meanwhile, Minh playing the steadiest of all had gained enough ground on Chris & Dustin to overtake them both.  Lance, having the best round of the day, started out a little shaky with two doubles and quickly shored up his game making the turn with a nice 2-over 38. Taking one triple on the back and struggling with some bogies he finished with an 83 and the victory. Nice win Lance and congratulations on a great season!!! Congratulations to Dustin Sitar, even though he finished tied for third ended up as the Hogan Player of the Year by 5 points over Lance Miller. What a finish!
Taking the lead after the first round for the Sarazen flight was Stephen Jarvis with a great back side of 37 for an 81, followed by Rick Offley who finished strong with birdie, par, birdie and an 86, closely followed by Erik Novikoff & Rod Brewster, Jr. at 87. Rick & Rod both lost their games at Siena and were flung out of the runnings. Erik made a valiant effort, but was too far behind from the first round. It was Stephen who out played the the field and won with an easy victory. His victory slid him firmly past Daniel Lasker to take the 2011 Player of the Year for the Sarazen flight. Congratulations Stephen for a great year!!!
In the Jones flight Ray Blackshear finished the first round with a nice 86, one shot ahead of Matthew Voskuil at 87 with Robert Woods three shots back at 90. Matthew, starting out strong with pars on his first four holes at Siena, finished his first 9 holes at 7 over only to hit the buzz saw on his second 9 sending him packing with empty hands. Robert put the pedal to the metal on Ray, but to no avail as Ray’s game stayed steady taking a quadruple bogie at #9, he was able to finish with another 86 and the victory. Congrats Ray, unfortunately, we are going to have to say goodbye to Ray as he is moving to the coast in California – we will miss you L. Congratulations to Stephen Sitar who grabbed the Player of the Year for the Senior Jones flight.
Congratulations to Scott Kassel who took the win at the Southern Nevada Championship along with the Player of the Year title for 2011.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2011 season. Our roster has grown to 111 and it because of you all. I have had a great time this year with you all and I look forward to 2012 with great expectation. Hope to see you all return next season. Recap - Primm Valley Championship

Las Vegas, NV- July 2, 2011 – A great day of golf was had by everyone. Great course, great scores, great competition and lots of fun!!! Hope everyone had an awesome Fourth of July weekend!

The Championship flight proved to be battle ground of golf with Keith Beaman making the turn in the lead with a sweet one under par 35 followed closely by Tyler Vest & Eric Fitzsimmons both at 36. Keith increased his lead by taking birdies at #10 & 11 as Tyler held steady with par and Eric began a bouncy Tigger streak going birdie, bogie, birdie, bogie and bouncing his way out of the victory. Tyler finished his round with 8 pars and a birdie at 17 for a nice one under backside. Keith, who actually struggled with a few 3 putts, was able to maintain par to finish even on the back putting him in a tie with Tyler. A playoff ensued with Keith winning on the first hole making a nice birdie. Congrats Keith on your 4th victory for the 2011 season.
Mike Lee set the pace for the Palmer flight with a nice one under 35 at the turn followed by Rick Hite at 37, Ed Aguilar (visiting from Kihei, HI) at 38, Dominic Sica & Richard Hunt (visiting from Phoenix, AZ) both at 39. Ed hit several bumps on the back to send him packing as Rick had a slow steady bleed which sent him packing as well.  Dominic taking only two bogies ended his trek with a 77 and third place. Mike’s game faltered on the back giving Richard an opening which he took. It seemed the hotter the day got the hotter his game  got, sailing along with steady pars then finishing strong with birdies at #17 & 18 giving him a sweet 2-under 33 for a 72 and a 3 shot victory. Great backside Richard and congratulations on your victory!

Can you say OMGosh in the Hogan flight with John Thompson firing an awesome 33 with 4 birdies on the front followed by Andy Sessa at 36 and Lance Miller at 37. Unfortunately for John he had the dual personality round and his evil twin showed up on the back floundering to find his game. Lance, whose game also faltered, ended up in a second place tie with John at 77. Andy, with the slow and steady game, played nicely on the back with only two bogies to finish with a nice 74 and his first victory, congratulations!

In the Senior Hogan flight Mike Fair (visiting from Tucson, AZ) made the turn with a 38 and a 4 shot lead over Scott Ulrich (visiting from Laguna Niguel, CA) and 5 over Richard Emery.  All though Richard’s game improved on the back it was too late for a recovery.  Scott, who faltered out the gate on the back, steadied his game and finished strong with a birdie at #18 giving Mike a run for his money.  Mike almost lost it at 18 where he had a weak finish with a double bogie, but he had a big enough lead to keep the victory and finish 1 stroke ahead of Scott. Congrats Mike on your victory!

It was another tight race in the Sarazen flight with Peter Quinn & Keir de Anda setting the pace with 41’s followed by  Michael Doyle (visiting from Columbia, MD), Todd Kissel & Rick Offley at 42. Todd hit several bumps on the back which thrust him out of the running. Peter, Michael & Rick all played steady and maintained their games finishing in a three way tie at 84. Keir was able to turn his game around giving him a 5 stroke victory over his three friends and a continued domination in the Sarazen flight. Nice Victory Keir!

The Jones flight was on fire, with Harry Sims, Jacob Rivera & Yuri Pickover (visiting from Malibu, CA) all making the turn at 42!!! Close behind was Larry Hanson at 44 and Ray Blackshear at 45. Unfortunately Harry started to lose ground right away and slipped out of the runnings. Larry taking a quad at #12 and a double at #18 sent him packing. Yuri and Jacob both continued to play well and steady while Ray, starting the backside out a little slow, found the zone at #15 with a birdie and continued with par giving him a nice 39!!! Ray, Jacob & Yuri all found their way to an 84 and a tie forcing a playoff. Jacob was able to hang on making par at the first hole giving him his 4th victory for 2011. Congratulations Jacob!

In the Snead flight, Nelson Lim (visiting from Tustin Ranch, CA) seemed to like this course playing a very steady round.  Nelson made the turn with a nice 44 and a four shot lead over Scott Kassel. Nelson never gave up his lead and finished his round with a 43 for a nice 87. Congrats Nelson!

Mountain Falls Recap

Las Vegas, NV- May 22, 2011 – Ok, so Michael had to take a road trip without me to Pahrump. I understand Betsey and Charlene keep track of him keeping him out of places he shouldn’t be! Still NO baby at this moment, but I understand the Mountain Falls Invitational went well and the weather was incredible. A BIG THANK YOU to my awesome team Betsey Bell, Michael and to Sarah McGuire who stepped in to take my place so I could be at the not- yet-birth of my grandbaby. A HUGE THANK YOU  to the Pahrump Nugget who generously gave us such great rates for our event!

It was a hard fought battle on the front side in the Palmer flight with new comer, Gerald Kring, Mike Lee & Rick Hite all tied at the turn. It quickly faded for Mike & Rick who both struggled on the back leaving a wide gap between them and Gerald by the end of the round. Congratulations Gerald for your first win in your first event with the Las Vegas Tour. I’m looking forward to seeing some great competition in the Palmer Flight!

Congratulations to Dustin Sitar in the Hogan flight who had a stellar round of 75, which included a birdie at #7 and his best score of the season. This was Dustin’s second win in a row. Todd Jensen finished a distant second at 82.

Combining the Senior Hogan & Senior Sarazen flight proved to give Scott Walker an advantage over Robert Woods & Art Eichmann who finished only one stroke apart.  Scott taking a sweet eagle at hole #3 made the turn at 40, 5 shots ahead of Art & 7 shots ahead of Robert. Coodo’s to Robert who fought back finishing his last 5 holes one under par! Congratulations to Scott on his 3rd victory for the 2011 season and a spot at the 2011 nationals at PGA West!

It was a tight race in the Sarazen flight between Kier de Anda & Charlene Delacruz battling it out on the front side with Keir making a strong turn around taking two birdies at 7 & 8 while Charlene began to struggle giving Keir a 4 shot lead at the turn. The battle raged on with Charlene pulling even with Keir at hole #15. As the dust settle at 18 the two found themselves tied heading to a playoff.  The decision was made on the first hole with Keir making a par

In the Jones flight Larry Hanson started his front nine with a triple & ended it with a quad, but in-between with two birdies and two bogies was even par while his closest competitor, Ray Blackshear struggled to find his game making the turn 7 shots behind.  Something snapped with Ray at the turn playing the first 4 holes on the back at one over which gave him an opportunity to pick up 5 shots on Larry. Ray then lost one back at #14 with a double while Larry firmed up his game playing the last 4 holes even with Ray giving Larry the victory by 3 shots. Congratulations Larry on your first victory in the 2011 season! Way to fight back Ray.

Welcome Frank Cremen to the GOLF CHANNEL Amateur Tour Las Vegas. Playing in his first event with the Las Vegas Tour, Frank ended up with an easy victory in the Snead flight as Scott Kassel struggled to find his game. Nice birdie on hole #4 and congratulations on your first win!
